Garden & Allotment Jobs for December

A Whimsical Note from The Fleur Kitchen Winter Plot

December arrives with a hush — the garden settles beneath its frost-sparkled quilt, and our allotments become places of quiet industry and gentle waiting. Though the days are short and the earth rests, there are still small, meaningful tasks to keep hands busy and hearts warmed.

Tending the Winter Bed

  • Protect & Tuck In: Lay fleece or cloches over tender crops. Strawberries and artichokes appreciate a little extra covering — like tucking them in with a cosy quilt.

  • Mulch the Soil: A generous blanket of leaf mould or compost keeps soil life humming beneath the surface, like a secret feast for worms.

  • Check Supports: Winter winds test our handiwork. Walk the beds, tighten ties, and prop canes, so peas and beans have strong shoulders to lean on when spring comes.

Planting Dreams for the New Year

  • Garlic & Broad Beans: If the ground isn’t frozen solid, slip cloves and beans into the earth. They’ll quietly root in the cold and be ready to burst forth when warmth returns.

  • Fruit Bushes & Trees: Bare-root raspberries, currants, or apples can still be planted now. A little winter planting feels like writing next year’s story in invisible ink.

Care & Store

  • Check Your Stores: Peek into baskets of apples, onions, and squashes. Remove any soft or spoiled ones — a bad neighbour spreads trouble quickly.

  • Feed the Birds: They are our winter companions and future helpers. Fat balls, seeds, and fresh water keep them cheery, and they’ll repay you with song and pest control come spring.

Planning & Pondering

  • Seed Catalogues: December is for dreaming. Curl up by the fire with a mug of spiced tea, and mark the pages of seed catalogues with hopeful plans.

  • Sketch the Plot: A pencil map of where the carrots thrived or the courgettes sprawled can be a lantern guiding your spring sowings.

A Whisper of Folklore

"As the days grow short, the roots grow deep.

"The old saying reminds us that winter is never wasted — unseen growth prepares the garden for seasons yet to bloom.
